How to Prepare for an MRI

Perhaps you are experiencing chronic pain in your back or you have been having migraine headaches. Maybe you have broken your arm or you have been hearing a strange clicking sound in your neck. Whatever it is that is ailing you, your doctor may order an MRI.

An MRI, or magnetic resonance imaging, is a type of medical imaging that relies on a magnetic field and pulses of radio wave energy to produce pictures of organs and other structures within the body. MRIs are considered a valuable tool in diagnosing medical conditions, as they can often pick up things that other imaging method cannot.

If your doctor has ordered an open MRI in New Jersey and you have never had one before, you may be wondering what you need to do to prepare for the test. While there isn’t much that needs to be done to prepare for this type of test, here is a look at some things that can help to ensure your MRI goes as smoothly as possible:

  • Be mindful when you are getting dressed before the exam. An MRI is essentially a large magnet. As such, any metal on your person will be drawn to the machine. Avoid wearing anything that has metal, including belts, bras with metal hooks, zippers with metal on them, or any decorative accessories that may be metal. Loose, comfortable clothing is always a smart choice. Remove any jewelry you’re wearing before exam.
  • Show up at least one-half hour before your appointment. This will give you enough time to fill out any necessary paperwork and won’t delay your appointment.
  • If you have any metal plates within your body or a pacemaker, consult your physician if you have a metallic implant or pacemaker prior to your MRI.
